Audi A4
V6 common-rail diesel with 132 kW. Piezo injectors can fail expensively. Timing chain on gearbox side, involved replacement. Solid with good maintenance.
Refined multi-cylinder โ relaxed cruising
180 hp 2.7L with a pleasant, refined character. Relaxed long-distance cruiser without sporting ambitions. Factor in the known weak points.
Engine Weaknesses 5
On the BPP (EA896), injectors can become fouled or fail, causing irregular idle, juddering, and increased fuel consumption. Typically from 120,000 km onwards.
Symptoms: Blue smoke at cold start after standing, white smoke during operation, engine knocking, oil level above maximum
The EGR cooler can crack or leak due to high temperatures and aggressive residues. Coolant enters the intake tract, potentially causing engine damage. Repair costs โฌ1,100โ2,200.
Symptoms: Gradual coolant loss, white-blue smoke from exhaust, rising temperature, unusual smell in the interior
The high temperatures and boost pressures of the V6 diesel typically cause turbocharger damage from 150,000 km. Repair is very labour-intensive due to space constraints โ engine removal is often required.
Symptoms: Noticeable power loss, black or blue smoke, elevated oil consumption, turbo whistling or bearing play
Faulty intake manifold flap control units cause knocking noises and elevated idle speed on the BPP during warm-up. The problem usually disappears once operating temperature is reached.
Symptoms: Diesel-like knocking at 1,300โ2,000 rpm up to approx. 60ยฐC coolant temperature, elevated idle (~1,400 instead of 1,200 rpm), delayed throttle response
Following the emissions software update, EGR valve problems on the 2.7 TDI have increased (carbon fouling, sticking). Symptoms include black smoke and juddering, sometimes without any fault code stored.
Symptoms: Black exhaust smoke, juddering at part throttle, elevated fuel consumption, engine warning light possibly without fault entry
Vehicle Weaknesses 7
The CVT Multitronic gearbox tends to judder when pulling away, rpm fluctuations and complete failure when not serviced properly. Control unit defects often appear from around 100,000 km.
On the 2.0 TDI the hexagonal shaft of the oil pump drive can snap, causing immediate oil pressure loss and engine damage. Preventive replacement is recommended.
Airbags manufactured by Takata can deploy with excess pressure and propel metal fragments. Worldwide recall campaign.
Control arms and tie rod ends wear prematurely. Clunking and rumbling on poor surfaces. The multi-link front axle is maintenance-intensive.
Defective ignition coils can immobilise the engine or cause severe running roughness. Mainly affects 1.8T and 2.0 TFSI engines.
From model year 2004 Audi used partial bonding instead of full galvanisation. Wheel arches and sills are vulnerable to rust, especially on older examples without cavity protection.
Rear wheel bearings fail regularly on the A4 B7. Quattro models show increased wear.
