Audi A4 · Sedan
Audi 3.0 V6 TDI with 204 PS (150 kW). Entry version of the V6 TDI in the A4 B7. Simple unit injector design, high mileages achievable without problems. Cam belt and EGR valve are the main service items.
Smooth Multi-Cylinder — Relaxed Cruising
204 hp 3.0L with a pleasantly smooth character. Cruises effortlessly without sporting ambitions. Factor in the known weak points.
Engine Weaknesses 6
Like the BMK, the BKN piezo injectors tend to fail from around 120,000 km and seize in the cylinder head. All six must be replaced at the same time; the fault was corrected in 2007-onward production.
Symptoms: Heavy white smoke, blue smoke after sitting, engine knock, oil level rises due to diesel contamination
Four separate timing chains can stretch. Worn tensioners produce rattling; in the worst case the chain skips and causes total engine failure. Repair requires 15–20 hours labour.
Symptoms: Rattling on cold start, camshaft position fault codes, rough engine when cold
The BKN 3.0 TDI A4 B7 has a known timing chain weakness. After tensioner replacement the chain may still be stretched and require full replacement. Typical from around 85,000 km in some cases.
Symptoms: Rattling on cold start for 2 seconds when engine is warm. Noise on restart after short standing time.
The EGR valve and EGR cooler coke up heavily with short-trip use and can completely block the intake pipes. The junction between the EGR pipe and throttle body is particularly affected.
Symptoms: Black smoke, power loss, elevated soot emissions, fault code P0400/P0401, jerky acceleration
From 150,000–200,000 km the glow plugs seize in the aluminium head. They frequently break on removal, requiring expensive head work — risk increases with age and mileage.
Symptoms: Poor cold-start performance, flashing glow plug light, engine stumbling when cold
On the BKN 3.0 TDI injectors are also a concern. Read injector correction values at every service; replace if deviations are high.
Symptoms: Rough idle, hesitation especially on cold start, increased fuel consumption.
Vehicle Weaknesses 7
The CVT Multitronic gearbox tends to judder when pulling away, rpm fluctuations and complete failure when not serviced properly. Control unit defects often appear from around 100,000 km.
On the 2.0 TDI the hexagonal shaft of the oil pump drive can snap, causing immediate oil pressure loss and engine damage. Preventive replacement is recommended.
Airbags manufactured by Takata can deploy with excess pressure and propel metal fragments. Worldwide recall campaign.
Control arms and tie rod ends wear prematurely. Clunking and rumbling on poor surfaces. The multi-link front axle is maintenance-intensive.
Defective ignition coils can immobilise the engine or cause severe running roughness. Mainly affects 1.8T and 2.0 TFSI engines.
From model year 2004 Audi used partial bonding instead of full galvanisation. Wheel arches and sills are vulnerable to rust, especially on older examples without cavity protection.
Rear wheel bearings fail regularly on the A4 B7. Quattro models show increased wear.
