Audi A4
Older 30V V6 naturally aspirated engine from the ABC family, mechanically straightforward (no turbo, no direct injection). Suffers from early stretch of the internal camshaft chains, oil consumption and ageing seals. Chain replacement is labour-intensive.
Smooth multi-cylinder β effortless touring
165 hp 2.4L with pleasant refinement. Relaxed cruising, no sporting ambitions. Budget for the known weak points.
Engine Weaknesses 5
The internal timing chains in the cylinder head stretch from around 100,000 km. Failed chain tensioners can no longer keep the chain taut; in the worst case it skips and the engine is destroyed.
Symptoms: Rattling and knocking on cold start at the cylinder head area, rough running and misfires, engine light with camshaft error codes
On the 2.4 V6, the idler and tensioner pulleys can fail β stiffening or squealing β before the actual belt interval is reached. Pulley failure can destroy the timing belt.
Symptoms: Squealing from the engine bay, belt flutter, worst case engine damage from a snapped belt.
Thirsty by design. Typical consumption is 0.5β1 litre per 1,000 km. On neglected examples, piston ring and valve stem seal wear add to the problem.
Symptoms: Engine oil level drops regularly, faint oil smell, no visible external oil leak
Valve cover gaskets go porous after 150,000+ km. The sealing rings on the cam phasers also shrink over time. Replace both at the same time.
Symptoms: Oil spots under the engine, oil traces around the valve covers, oil smell when engine is warm
Like other V6 naturally aspirated engines, the 2.4 V6 AGA/APS shows increased oil consumption from ageing valve stem seals. Can be done affordably during the timing belt service.
Symptoms: Top-up needed at around 0.5 L/1,000 km, slightly blue exhaust on cold start or after extended idle periods.
Vehicle Weaknesses 10
The CVT Multitronic gearbox tends to judder when pulling away, rpm fluctuations and complete failure when not serviced properly. Control unit defects often appear from around 100,000 km.
On the 2.0 TDI the hexagonal shaft of the oil pump drive can snap, causing immediate oil pressure loss and engine damage. Preventive replacement is recommended.
Airbags manufactured by Takata can deploy with excess pressure and propel metal fragments. Worldwide recall campaign.
Control arms and tie rod ends wear prematurely. Clunking and rumbling on poor surfaces. The multi-link front axle is maintenance-intensive.
Defective ignition coils can immobilise the engine or cause severe running roughness. Mainly affects 1.8T and 2.0 TFSI engines.
From model year 2004 Audi used partial bonding instead of full galvanisation. Wheel arches and sills are vulnerable to rust, especially on older examples without cavity protection.
Same as B6: the glass rear window separates. Audi recall ended approximately 2008. Silicone adhesive permanently damages the rear window β never use silicone.
Hydraulic cylinders in the B-pillar lose oil, pump can no longer build pressure. Workshop cost for pump replacement at Audi approximately β¬3,000. Specialists are cheaper.
Rear wheel bearings fail regularly on the A4 B7. Quattro models show increased wear.
The convertible has less torsional rigidity than the closed variants by design. Creaking noises occur on poor road surfaces.
