Audi A4
1.8T with 140 kW for A4 B6. Higher output level with stronger turbo. Same basic issues as AVJ, under greater thermal stress.
Solid everyday engine — gets the job done
190 hp 1.8L for daily use. Watch the known weak points. Manual gearbox is pleasantly light.
Engine Weaknesses 6
The AWA 1.8T EA113 tends to severe oil sludge formation (sludge) with irregular oil changes, blocking oil passages and leading to oil-starved camshaft bearing lubrication. Engine damage likely.
Symptoms: Oil pressure warning light, chain rattle on cold start, ticking, in the worst case engine damage from camshaft failure
The EA113 1.8T uses a timing belt with a recommended 90,000 km change interval. The water pump has a plastic impeller that can break when worn. Replacement together is mandatory.
Symptoms: Coolant loss, overheating on water pump failure; engine damage on timing belt failure
With long oil change intervals, solid sludge deposits form throughout the lubrication circuit. Blocks the oil pump strainer and leads to oil pressure drop and engine damage.
Symptoms: Sporadic oil pressure warning light, metallic clicking, oil pressure loss
The EA113 1.8T ignition coils are a known wear item and frequently fail, often all four in quick succession. Complete replacement of all coils when one fails makes sense.
Symptoms: Rough running, misfires, engine warning light, power loss, noticeable judder at idle
The N75 boost control solenoid on the 1.8T is a frequent wear item and causes fluctuating boost pressure. Vacuum hoses also become brittle and leak with age.
Symptoms: Irregular boost pressure, power hesitation, engine surging, turbo-related fault messages
Valve cover gasket and spark plug tube seals harden with age and develop leaks. Oil contaminating the spark plug zone can cause misfires.
Symptoms: Oil smell from engine bay, oil on spark plugs, misfires
Vehicle Weaknesses 7
The multi-link front axle is prone to control arm wear. Rubber bushings and bushes become brittle. The upper mounting bolt corrodes and frequently snaps on removal.
Thermostat fails frequently. If it sticks open, the engine stays cold (cold heating, high fuel consumption); if it sticks closed, overheating is imminent. Replace the water pump at the same time.
Tie rod ends and steering bearings wear early due to the heavy front end. Ageing rubber parts crack, creating steering play. Frequent TÜV failure point.
The AC compressor fails at higher mileages, often caused by lack of AC servicing. Total cost for compressor replacement is €700–1,300.
Water enters the passenger compartment through blocked AC condensate drains or faulty seals in the water drain tray. Consequential damage to electronics and carpets possible.
Almost all A4 B6 (8E) vehicles suffer from severely degrading soft-touch paint on the dashboard, centre console and door panels. The paint reacts with hand cream and dissolves. Audi only improved the formula at the end of 2004.
The door wiring harness breaks at the flex point from repeated opening and closing. Window regulators, central locking, speakers and door mirrors are affected.
