Audi S3
EA888 Evo with 228 kW for S3. High-performance four-cylinder with reinforced bottom end and larger turbocharger. Very agile and rev-happy.
Golf R in Audi clothing — paying for comfort, not speed
Same EA888, same Haldex — which feels like FWD in normal driving. The premium buys a nicer interior and quieter exhaust, not driving dynamics. Anyone chasing performance buys the Golf R and puts the savings into a Stage 1 tune. Anyone wanting comfort with speed on tap: right choice.
Engine Weaknesses 9
The standard oil pump delivers only approx. 1.8–2.0 bar at idle instead of the required 3.5 bar. Camshaft phasers and chain tensioners are therefore under-supplied, leading to rattling and in advanced stages to bearing damage.
Symptoms: Metallic rattling or ticking on cold start and at idle (approx. 1,000–2,500 rpm), rough engine running, sporadic camshaft fault codes in OBD
The EA888 Gen3 timing chain tends to elongation from around 80,000–100,000 km, encouraged by too-long oil change intervals or poor quality oil.
Symptoms: Metallic rattling immediately after cold start, subsiding after a few seconds; engine warning light; in extreme cases engine damage from chain skip
The plastic impeller of the standard water pump can detach from the shaft at around 100,000–120,000 km, causing coolant circulation to stop abruptly.
Symptoms: Coolant temperature rises unexpectedly, heater suddenly produces no heat, coolant loss with no visible leak
The PCV valve or oil separator in the EA888 Gen3 cam cover wears and causes air leaks and elevated crankcase pressure.
Symptoms: Rough idle, stumbling when accelerating, oil film in intake pipe, increased oil consumption, engine warning light from mixture fault
The standard EA888 Gen3 ignition coils are considered sensitive. Individual coils fail from around 60,000–80,000 km.
Symptoms: Engine stumbling and juddering under load, misfire fault codes (P0300–P0304), engine warning light flashing, noticeable power loss
The 7-speed DSG DQ381 tends to premature clutch wear with frequent city driving and stop-and-go. Overheating leads to juddering and in extreme cases destruction of the mechatronic unit.
Symptoms: Juddering on pull-away and low-speed shifting, vibration when upshifting under full load, gearbox fault message
The high-pressure pump roller tappet wears against the cam profile from around 60,000–100,000 km. With advanced wear, the camshaft can be damaged.
Symptoms: Harsh injection noises, rough running on cold start, power loss, starting problems from pressure drop
As a direct injector, the 2.0 TFSI can develop carbon deposits on the intake valves, especially with frequent short-trip use.
Symptoms: Rough engine running under partial load, slight power loss, rough cold start, increased fuel consumption
The IS20/IS38 turbocharger wastegate linkage on the EA888 Gen3 develops mechanical play, causing metallic rattling between 1,800 and 2,900 rpm.
Symptoms: Metallic jingling or rattling in the mid-rpm range (1,800–2,900 rpm), especially at steady partial load
Vehicle Weaknesses 5
The 7-speed S tronic gearbox tends to judder and shudder at low speeds. The cause is clutch pack wear, rarely a faulty mechatronics unit. Oil change every 60,000 km is mandatory.
On quattro variants the Haldex Gen 5 pre-charge pump can fail. Without a functioning pump the rear axle transfers no power. Regular Haldex coupling oil changes prevent damage.
Dirt collects at door lower edges and behind wheel arch liners, leading to corrosion. In salt-heavy regions rust appears on door edges and sills. Often hidden behind plastic covers.
The MMI infotainment system freezes or restarts unexpectedly. Bluetooth connections, sat-nav and rear-view camera affected. Software updates resolve most cases.
The rear brake discs wear and rust relatively quickly due to the factory brake force distribution. TÜV inspection reports regularly list brake wear as a deficiency.
