Audi S3

CJXC 2.0L TFSI 300 hp Automatic All-wheel drive Sedan 2013–2016
– Be Careful
Engine CJXC – Be Careful 8,090–30,220 $

EA888 Gen 3 with 300 PS (221 kW) in the S3 8V (base version). Turbocharged four-cylinder with very high power density. Prone to oil carbon deposits and turbocharger oil leaks under high-load use. Watch for coolant loss from thermostat housing.

Fun Factor? Fun to Drive!

Golf R in Audi clothing — paying for comfort, not speed

Same EA888, same Haldex — which feels like FWD in normal driving. The premium buys a nicer interior and quieter exhaust, not driving dynamics. Anyone chasing performance buys the Golf R and puts the savings into a Stage 1 tune. Anyone wanting comfort with speed on tap: right choice.

Engine Weaknesses 8

!! IHI IS38 turbocharger — bearing wear under high load

The IHI IS38 turbocharger in the S3 spins up to 30,000 rpm and is designed for sustained high output. Inadequate oil supply, heat soak after shutdown without post-run cooling, and carbon-heavy engine oil cause bearing wear. Oil loss from the turbo into the intake tract is possible.

Symptoms: Whistling/howling noise, bluish smoke, oil traces under the turbocharger, boost pressure drop, P0299

1,200–3,500 $ from 120,000 km
!! Timing chain stretched

Simplex timing chain stretches faster on the S3 due to high thermal and mechanical load (300 hp, spirited driving). Cold-start rattling possible from ~80,000 km; tensioner requires elevated oil pressure. Inspection recommended from 80,000 km.

Symptoms: Metallic rattling on cold start, rough running, fault codes P0016/P0017

900–1,800 $ from 80,000 km
!! Oil pump — pressure drop at low rpm

Two-stage variable oil pump delivers insufficient oil pressure in city traffic and after long standstill periods. Camshaft phaser rattles; in extreme cases balance shaft bearings fail from lack of lubrication. Critical on the 300 hp variant — engine damage possible.

Symptoms: Rattling after cold start, oil pressure warning, camshaft phaser fault codes, rattling from the lower engine

500–1,500 $ from 70,000 km
!! HPFP cam follower worn

High-pressure pump cam follower wears; on the 300 hp variant the pump runs under maximum load. Metal debris in the fuel system after total failure. Regular inspection via the service port is mandatory.

Symptoms: Fuel pressure drop, starting problems, P0087, metallic knocking from pump area

150–5,000 $ from 75,000 km
!! Elevated oil consumption (pre-production piston rings)

Early S3 8V (up to around 2015) can show elevated oil consumption from narrow oil scraper rings. At 300 hp and with spirited driving the ring-groove coking accelerates. Vehicles from production week 35/2015 with revised rings are significantly less affected.

Symptoms: Oil consumption >0.5 L/1,000 km, oily spark plugs, bluish smoke at full throttle

2,500–5,500 $ from 60,000 km
!! Water pump fails

Plastic water pump becomes brittle and cracks. At 300 hp the thermal load is higher than on weaker variants. Recommended: preventive swap to metal impeller variant at 80,000 km.

Symptoms: Coolant loss, overtemperature reading, heater failure, coolant smell

280–550 $ from 95,000 km
! PCV membrane valve torn

The crankcase ventilation membrane valve (06H 103 495 AK) tears. Under boost pressure an intake leak forms; oil mist contaminates the intercooler and intake tract. Frequent wear item on all EA888 Gen3.

Symptoms: Whistling noise during acceleration, P2279 intake leak, power loss, oil film in intercooler

80–220 $ from 60,000 km
! Intake valve coking

Direct injection without port injection causes valve coking. Spirited driving and EGR accelerate the process. Walnut blasting every 50,000–70,000 km recommended to avoid power loss.

Symptoms: Power loss at full throttle, rough cold start, P2015 tumble flap fault, increased consumption

300–600 $ from 55,000 km

Vehicle Weaknesses 5

!! Gearbox S tronic Clutch Judder

The 7-speed S tronic gearbox tends to judder and shudder at low speeds. The cause is clutch pack wear, rarely a faulty mechatronics unit. Oil change every 60,000 km is mandatory.

1,300–5,000 $ from 80,000 km
!! Other Haldex Pre-Charge Pump Failure

On quattro variants the Haldex Gen 5 pre-charge pump can fail. Without a functioning pump the rear axle transfers no power. Regular Haldex coupling oil changes prevent damage.

400–3,500 $ from 90,000 km
! Rust Door Lower Edge Rust

Dirt collects at door lower edges and behind wheel arch liners, leading to corrosion. In salt-heavy regions rust appears on door edges and sills. Often hidden behind plastic covers.

200–1,500 $
! Electronics MMI Infotainment Freezing

The MMI infotainment system freezes or restarts unexpectedly. Bluetooth connections, sat-nav and rear-view camera affected. Software updates resolve most cases.

0–1,000 $
! Brakes Rear Axle Brake Wear

The rear brake discs wear and rust relatively quickly due to the factory brake force distribution. TÜV inspection reports regularly list brake wear as a deficiency.

280–550 $ from 60,000 km
