Audi S3

CJXB 2.0L TFSI 280 hp Automatic All-wheel drive Sedan 2012–2016
– Be Careful
Engine CJXB – Be Careful 4,690–23,720 $

2.0-litre TFSI from the EA888 Gen3 range with 300 PS for the S3 variant. Improved timing chain drive over Gen1/2; water pump and thermostat housing failure documented from 60,000–100,000 km. Carbon deposits on intake valves — clear regularly with walnut blasting. Check diverter valve as known weak point.

Fun Factor? Fun to Drive!

Golf R in Audi clothing — paying for comfort, not speed

Same EA888, same Haldex — which feels like FWD in normal driving. The premium buys a nicer interior and quieter exhaust, not driving dynamics. Anyone chasing performance buys the Golf R and puts the savings into a Stage 1 tune. Anyone wanting comfort with speed on tap: right choice.

Engine Weaknesses 7

!! Timing chain stretched

Simplex timing chain stretches prematurely at 265 hp and with spirited driving. Cold-start rattling possible from ~80,000 km. When the chain tensioner is extended more than 7 teeth, the chain must be replaced.

Symptoms: Rattling on cold start, P0016/P0017, rough running when cold

900–1,800 $ from 85,000 km
!! Oil pump — pressure deficit at low load

Variable oil pump delivers insufficient oil pressure at idle and in city driving; camshaft phasers and chain tensioners are starved. Rattling is the first warning sign; engine damage possible if ignored.

Symptoms: Rattling after cold start, oil pressure warning, camshaft phaser fault codes

500–1,500 $ from 80,000 km
!! HPFP cam follower worn

High-pressure pump cam follower wears and produces metal debris in the fuel system. Total failure contaminates injectors and lines (repair €3,000–5,000). Visual inspection at every second oil change.

Symptoms: P0087 fuel pressure fault, starting problems, power loss, knocking from pump area

150–5,000 $ from 75,000 km
!! IS38 turbocharger wastegate rattle

The IHI IS38 wastegate linkage develops play from thermal expansion. Rattling between 1,800–2,900 rpm is the typical symptom. Actuator failure from moisture ingress is possible. Actuator repair is an alternative to turbocharger replacement (€450–800).

Symptoms: Rattling at mid-range rpm, fluctuating boost pressure, P0299

300–2,500 $ from 100,000 km
!! Water pump plastic housing cracks

Plastic water pump becomes brittle and cracks under thermal load. Higher stress at 265 hp. Impeller detachment leads to complete pump failure and overheating.

Symptoms: Coolant loss, overtemperature warning, coolant smell, poor heater output

280–550 $ from 95,000 km
! PCV membrane valve leaking

PCV membrane valve (06H 103 495 AK) tears with age. Under boost pressure this creates an intake leak. Inexpensive replacement part (~€70), but a frequent issue on all EA888 Gen3 engines.

Symptoms: Intake hissing noise, power loss, P2279 fault codes, rough idle

80–220 $ from 65,000 km
! Intake valve coking

Direct injection without port injection leads to valve coking. Walnut blasting every 50,000–70,000 km is necessary to maintain full power and smooth running.

Symptoms: Power loss, rough cold start, P2015 tumble flap fault, increased fuel consumption

300–600 $ from 58,000 km

Vehicle Weaknesses 5

!! Gearbox S tronic Clutch Judder

The 7-speed S tronic gearbox tends to judder and shudder at low speeds. The cause is clutch pack wear, rarely a faulty mechatronics unit. Oil change every 60,000 km is mandatory.

1,300–5,000 $ from 80,000 km
!! Other Haldex Pre-Charge Pump Failure

On quattro variants the Haldex Gen 5 pre-charge pump can fail. Without a functioning pump the rear axle transfers no power. Regular Haldex coupling oil changes prevent damage.

400–3,500 $ from 90,000 km
! Rust Door Lower Edge Rust

Dirt collects at door lower edges and behind wheel arch liners, leading to corrosion. In salt-heavy regions rust appears on door edges and sills. Often hidden behind plastic covers.

200–1,500 $
! Electronics MMI Infotainment Freezing

The MMI infotainment system freezes or restarts unexpectedly. Bluetooth connections, sat-nav and rear-view camera affected. Software updates resolve most cases.

0–1,000 $
! Brakes Rear Axle Brake Wear

The rear brake discs wear and rust relatively quickly due to the factory brake force distribution. TÜV inspection reports regularly list brake wear as a deficiency.

280–550 $ from 60,000 km
