Audi A3
EA211 generation 1.4-litre turbo petrol with cam belt drive. Overall more reliable than the predecessor EA111, but prone to oil consumption from worn piston rings and timing chain wear on certain early build years.
Solid everyday engine โ does its job
122 hp 1.4L for everyday use. Watch for known weak points. Manual gearchange pleasantly light.
Engine Weaknesses 7
Faulty camshaft adjusters can damage or rupture the timing belt. Mainly EA211 engines from 2014 are affected. Engine failure on rupture is almost certain.
Symptoms: Vibration and rough engine, EPC warning light, engine warning light, camshaft adjuster fault codes (P0336, P12E2).
Early EA211 versions (up to approx. 2015) are prone to coked piston rings from short trips. Oil consumption rises to 0.5โ1 l/1,000 km; engine overhaul required.
Symptoms: Oil level drops noticeably between oil changes, blue smoke on cold start or under load, oil warning light comes on.
The belt-driven EA211 water pump fails prematurely. VW retrofitted an improved version. Failure can lead to overheating.
Symptoms: Coolant level warning on display, temperature gauge rising above normal, coolant loss without visible external leak.
On the CZCA/CZEA 1.4 TFSI EA211 the turbocharger wastegate can stick or leak, leading to irregular boost pressure and power loss.
Symptoms: Power loss under load, irregular acceleration, occasional boost pressure fault in memory.
On EA211 engines (CZCA, CZEA, CZDA) the water pump fails prematurely. The belt-driven unit is more maintenance-intensive than its predecessor.
Symptoms: Coolant temperature rising, coolant loss, engine temperature warning light.
Direct injection without port spray prevents intake valves from self-cleaning. Deposits form from blow-by gases, especially with short-trip use.
Symptoms: Power loss, rough idle, increased fuel consumption, surging under load, engine running as if misfiring.
The EA211 1.4 TFSI (CZCA/CZEA/CZDA) accumulates carbon deposits on the intake valves as a direct-injection engine. Short-trip use accelerates the process.
Symptoms: Power loss, increased consumption, rough cold running, occasional misfires.
Vehicle Weaknesses 4
On quattro variants the Haldex Gen 5 pre-charge pump can fail. Without a functioning pump the rear axle transfers no power. Regular Haldex coupling oil changes prevent damage.
Dirt collects at door lower edges and behind wheel arch liners, leading to corrosion. In salt-heavy regions rust appears on door edges and sills. Often hidden behind plastic covers.
The MMI infotainment system freezes or restarts unexpectedly. Bluetooth connections, sat-nav and rear-view camera affected. Software updates resolve most cases.
The rear brake discs wear and rust relatively quickly due to the factory brake force distribution. TรV inspection reports regularly list brake wear as a deficiency.
