Engine Weaknesses 5
The piston ring lands of the 2.5 TFSI five-cylinder can crack under high ignition pressure. Known primarily in tuned vehicles, but also reported in stock form. Repairs start at around β¬7,900.
Symptoms: Loud knocking, compression loss on one cylinder, rough engine running, oil contamination
Intake swirl flap screws can come loose and fall into the combustion chamber. Documented total engine losses with piston and injector destruction from ~53,000 km. Factory defect; check for goodwill coverage.
Symptoms: Sudden power loss, loud bang, engine will not restart
Timing chain rattle on cold start is known on the 2.5 TFSI (EA855). Software update SVM 01A098 (July 2012) addresses the problem. Repair requires gearbox removal; cost β¬3,000β5,000.
Symptoms: Metallic rattling on cold start at 2,000β3,000 rpm, disappears after warm-up
Direct injection without port injection leads to typical carbon deposits on the intake valves. Particularly relevant with spirited driving and high mileages. Walnut shell blasting recommended.
Symptoms: Power loss, stumbling, worse cold-start behaviour, increased consumption
The DMSA 2.0 TFSI in the A4 B9 40 TFSI shows noticeable idle vibrations on some examples. The root cause has not been definitively identified. Engine mounts and chassis tuning are discussed.
Symptoms: Perceptible vibrations at idle, especially noticeable through the bodywork, unpleasant on short trips.
Vehicle Weaknesses 6
In the 2.0 TDI with 140/170 PS (built before April 2008) thermal stress can cause cracks in the cylinder head. Coolant loss, overheating and expensive engine damage result.
On 2008β2009 build years a sudden power loss can disable safety-critical systems such as ABS and ESP. The cause is a defective control unit ground point.
The 7-speed S tronic dual-clutch gearbox wears the clutch packs excessively in frequent stop-and-go traffic. Juddering when pulling away, delayed gear changes and, in worst cases, mechatronics failure.
Rear springs frequently break in the region of the spring seat, often due to corrosion starting there. The break often goes unnoticed as it produces no noise.
Rust forms on rear wheel arches, side sills and the tailgate on older examples. Typical spots are the transitions between wings and sills.
On older 8P models, the rubber bushings in the control arms and stabilisers become prematurely soft. Typical for VAG vehicles of this era, especially after salty winters.
