Audi A3
Final evolution of the 1.9 PD with 85 kW. Considered mature and economical. Flywheel and injectors are typical wear items at high mileage.
Solid Everyday Engine β Gets the Job Done
116 hp 1.9L for everyday use. Factor in the known weak points. Manual gearbox pleasantly light.
Engine Weaknesses 9
On the 105 hp BLS individual con-rod bearing failures occur due to material defects. The knocking noise starts quietly but quickly escalates to severe engine damage.
Symptoms: Initially quiet, then progressively louder metallic knocking from the engine, especially under load
BLS engines from model year 2008 have a known con-rod bearing defect. The connecting rod can punch through the engine block without warning β total loss. Other build years are unaffected.
Symptoms: Knocking under the bonnet, oil pressure warning, progressively louder knock
Classic PD TDI problem: camshaft and bucket tappets wear from around 175,000 km. Longlife intervals promote premature wear.
Symptoms: Valve tapping, engine noise on cold start
The variable-geometry turbocharger tends to have seized vanes due to carbon from oil. Power loss and whistling are typical symptoms.
Symptoms: Whistling, power loss, black smoke
PD unit injectors are sensitive to fuel contamination. Even small particles cause damage. Replacement costs several hundred euros per injector.
Symptoms: Diesel knock, soot clouds, difficult cold start
The PDE injectors on the BLS are very sensitive to fuel and oil contamination. Faulty injectors cause misfires and high repair costs of β¬160β600 per element.
Symptoms: Hesitation at idle below 1,100 rpm, misfire fault codes, black smoke, difficult cold start
On the BLS too, the VGT vanes stick due to soot deposits, especially after a lot of city driving or short trips. Removal and cleaning or turbocharger replacement is required.
Symptoms: Power loss, check engine light, limp mode, whistling noises
The EGR valve on the BLS clogs with carbon. Frequent short trips accelerate the process. Cleaning or replacement required.
Symptoms: Hesitation, power loss, smoke
Typical problem on all 1.9 TDI PD engines: the EGR valve carbons up in short-trip operation. Cleaning or replacement at around 100,000 km is necessary.
Symptoms: Power loss, hesitation under acceleration, check engine light
Vehicle Weaknesses 5
In the 2.0 TDI with 140/170 PS (built before April 2008) thermal stress can cause cracks in the cylinder head. Coolant loss, overheating and expensive engine damage result.
On 2008β2009 build years a sudden power loss can disable safety-critical systems such as ABS and ESP. The cause is a defective control unit ground point.
Rear springs frequently break in the region of the spring seat, often due to corrosion starting there. The break often goes unnoticed as it produces no noise.
Rust forms on rear wheel arches, side sills and the tailgate on older examples. Typical spots are the transitions between wings and sills.
On older 8P models, the rubber bushings in the control arms and stabilisers become prematurely soft. Typical for VAG vehicles of this era, especially after salty winters.
