Audi A3
VR6 naturally aspirated engine with 184 kW. For the TT 3.2 Quattro. Characterful engine with timing chain issues (chain guides wear). High consumption, but very refined.
V6 Naturally Aspirated with Love of Revs
250 hp V6 — likes to rev, sounds great doing it.
Engine Weaknesses 5
All four timing chains can stretch, especially with long oil change intervals and short trips. The right-hand chain is often the first to go. Full chain kit replacement including gearbox removal is required.
Symptoms: Rattling or clattering on cold start, rough engine, power loss, increased fuel consumption, check engine light
FSI direct injection does not wash the intake valves with fuel, so oil mist residues accumulate as carbon deposits. Affects all 3.2 FSI engines systematically from around 80,000 km.
Symptoms: Power loss, hesitation under light throttle, poor throttle response, rough idle
Camshaft actuators on bank 1 or 2 respond sluggishly or stick in the wrong position. Faults occur due to oil deposits in the spool valve or wear with extended oil change intervals.
Symptoms: Check engine light, fault codes P0014/P0018, rough running, occasional hesitation under acceleration
V6 FSI engines show elevated oil consumption with age due to worn piston rings and valve stem seals. Typically 0.5–1.5 litres per 1,000 km from around 150,000 km.
Symptoms: Blue exhaust smoke when accelerating, oil level drops between changes, oil smell after shutting off
Individual ignition coils on the V6 BHE are a known wear item. When one arcs over or fails, a misfire appears on one cylinder and the check engine light illuminates.
Symptoms: Hesitation and power loss, especially in damp or cold conditions; misfire codes (P030x); running improves once the engine is warm
Vehicle Weaknesses 6
In the 2.0 TDI with 140/170 PS (built before April 2008) thermal stress can cause cracks in the cylinder head. Coolant loss, overheating and expensive engine damage result.
On 2008–2009 build years a sudden power loss can disable safety-critical systems such as ABS and ESP. The cause is a defective control unit ground point.
The 7-speed S tronic dual-clutch gearbox wears the clutch packs excessively in frequent stop-and-go traffic. Juddering when pulling away, delayed gear changes and, in worst cases, mechatronics failure.
Rear springs frequently break in the region of the spring seat, often due to corrosion starting there. The break often goes unnoticed as it produces no noise.
Rust forms on rear wheel arches, side sills and the tailgate on older examples. Typical spots are the transitions between wings and sills.
On older 8P models, the rubber bushings in the control arms and stabilisers become prematurely soft. Typical for VAG vehicles of this era, especially after salty winters.
