Audi A1
Three-cylinder with 70 kW. More powerful variant of the CHZE. Good torque for the displacement, smooth through balance shaft.
Solid everyday engine β gets the job done
95 hp 1.0L for daily use. Watch the known weak points. Manual gearbox is pleasantly light.
Engine Weaknesses 6
The EA111 1.4 TFSI (CHZD/CHZJ) shows defective chain tensioners and worn guide rails from as early as 30,000β50,000 km. A broken chain immediately bends the valves.
Symptoms: Rattling on cold start, engine warning light, in worst case sudden engine shutdown.
Electric wastegate actuator corrodes at the hinge joint between 13,000 and 50,000 km and loses function. Distinctive clattering on load change is typical.
Symptoms: Clattering or knocking on load change at 1,800β3,000 rpm, power loss, fault code P0299, whistling from turbo area
Like all EA111 variants, CHZD/CHZJ show excessive oil consumption from undersized oil scraper rings and thermally stressed pistons from the twincharger concept.
Symptoms: Oil consumption regularly above 0.5 L/1,000 km, oil smell, occasional blue smoke.
Lack of a balance shaft on the 95 hp version creates structural imbalance. Engine mounts therefore wear faster than on four-cylinder engines, typically after 60,000β80,000 km.
Symptoms: Increasing vibrations in steering wheel and gear lever, knocking noises from the engine bay, rattling especially at idle on cold start
Direct injection without intake port wetting. Especially with frequent short-trip driving, deposits form that narrow the intake cross-section and reduce power.
Symptoms: Power loss, rough idle, worse cold-start behaviour, increased fuel consumption after 60,000+ km
High-pressure injectors rated at 200β250 bar are sensitive to fuel quality. Poor fuel and neglected maintenance accelerate wear.
Symptoms: Hard cold start, rough engine running, power interruptions, stumbling when accelerating from low rpm
Vehicle Weaknesses 4
From around the seventh year of use, coil springs can snap from material fatigue and corrosion. The front axle is most commonly affected. A broken spring is an immediate safety hazard.
Early A1 8X models (2010β2013) showed increased breakdown rates from faulty ignition cables. Misfires and power loss are the result.
Electric window regulators fail regularly. The cause is usually a worn motor, snapped cable, or faulty control unit. Driver and passenger doors are most commonly affected.
The air conditioning loses refrigerant over the years through leaking seals and hoses. On older cars from around 8 years, the AC compressor and condenser become prone to wear.
