CHZD 1.0L TFSI 95 hp Manual Front-wheel drive 2015–2018
βœ– Stay Away!
Engine CHZD βœ– Stay Away! 4,030–12,350 €

Three-cylinder with 70 kW. More powerful variant of the CHZE. Good torque for the displacement, smooth through balance shaft.

Fun Factor? Decent

Solid everyday engine β€” gets the job done

95 hp 1.0L for daily use. Watch the known weak points. Manual gearbox is pleasantly light.

Engine Weaknesses 6

!! EA111 Timing Chain Breaks Prematurely

The EA111 1.4 TFSI (CHZD/CHZJ) shows defective chain tensioners and worn guide rails from as early as 30,000–50,000 km. A broken chain immediately bends the valves.

Symptoms: Rattling on cold start, engine warning light, in worst case sudden engine shutdown.

700–3,000 € from 60,000 km
!! Turbo Wastegate Actuator Corrosion Failure

Electric wastegate actuator corrodes at the hinge joint between 13,000 and 50,000 km and loses function. Distinctive clattering on load change is typical.

Symptoms: Clattering or knocking on load change at 1,800–3,000 rpm, power loss, fault code P0299, whistling from turbo area

300–800 € from 30,000 km
!! High Oil Consumption from Piston Rings

Like all EA111 variants, CHZD/CHZJ show excessive oil consumption from undersized oil scraper rings and thermally stressed pistons from the twincharger concept.

Symptoms: Oil consumption regularly above 0.5 L/1,000 km, oil smell, occasional blue smoke.

1,500–4,000 € from 50,000 km
! Engine Mount Wear from Three-Cylinder Vibrations

Lack of a balance shaft on the 95 hp version creates structural imbalance. Engine mounts therefore wear faster than on four-cylinder engines, typically after 60,000–80,000 km.

Symptoms: Increasing vibrations in steering wheel and gear lever, knocking noises from the engine bay, rattling especially at idle on cold start

200–600 € from 70,000 km
! Carbon Deposits on Intake Valves

Direct injection without intake port wetting. Especially with frequent short-trip driving, deposits form that narrow the intake cross-section and reduce power.

Symptoms: Power loss, rough idle, worse cold-start behaviour, increased fuel consumption after 60,000+ km

250–600 € from 70,000 km
! High-Pressure Injector Wear

High-pressure injectors rated at 200–250 bar are sensitive to fuel quality. Poor fuel and neglected maintenance accelerate wear.

Symptoms: Hard cold start, rough engine running, power interruptions, stumbling when accelerating from low rpm

400–1,200 € from 100,000 km

Vehicle Weaknesses 4

!! Suspension Coil springs snap

From around the seventh year of use, coil springs can snap from material fatigue and corrosion. The front axle is most commonly affected. A broken spring is an immediate safety hazard.

300–700 € from 120,000 km
!! Electronics Ignition cable failures (early models)

Early A1 8X models (2010–2013) showed increased breakdown rates from faulty ignition cables. Misfires and power loss are the result.

80–250 € from 40,000 km
! Electronics Window regulator failure

Electric window regulators fail regularly. The cause is usually a worn motor, snapped cable, or faulty control unit. Driver and passenger doors are most commonly affected.

100–400 € from 80,000 km
! HVAC Air conditioning β€” leaks and failure

The air conditioning loses refrigerant over the years through leaking seals and hoses. On older cars from around 8 years, the AC compressor and condenser become prone to wear.

200–800 € from 100,000 km
