Audi A1

CAYB 1.6L TDI 105 hp Manual Front-wheel drive 2010–2015
– Be Careful
Engine CAYB – Be Careful 3,030–8,650 €

EA189 1.6 TDI with 77 kW. Slightly more powerful than CAYC, same weaknesses. Well suited for economical commuting.

Fun Factor? Decent

Solid daily driver β€” gets the job done

105 hp 1.6L for everyday use. Mind the known weak points. Manual gearchange is pleasantly light.

Engine Weaknesses 5

!! Injector Premature Failure

All four injectors in the 1.6 TDI CAYB can fail around 100,000 km. Since Bosch/Siemens does not offer individual replacement, all four must be changed at once. Poor fuel quality significantly accelerates wear.

Symptoms: Juddering under acceleration, exhaust smoke, starting problems, rough idle, elevated fuel consumption

1,200–3,000 € from 110,000 km
!! EGR Valve Sooting and Failure

The EGR valve carbons up considerably faster due to increased EGR operation following the diesel software update. Sticking or seized valves cause juddering, power loss, and limp mode. Cooler cracks allow coolant to enter the exhaust tract.

Symptoms: Rough idle, black smoke, engine power loss, limp mode, fault code P0401

300–900 € from 90,000 km
!! Diesel Particulate Filter Blockage

The DPF on the 1.6 TDI becomes blocked with predominantly short-trip use, as regeneration temperature is not reached. Faulty EGR valves and injectors accelerate soot loading. Professional cleaning or replacement is then required.

Symptoms: DPF warning light, elevated fuel consumption, engine limp mode, power loss at low rpm

350–1,200 € from 120,000 km
!! Water Pump Regulating Valve Failure

On the 1.6 TDI (built up to 09/2014), the water pump regulating valve can fail. Coolant temperature rises to 130Β°C, triggering the red warning light. VW TPI 2041955 documents the issue. Secondary engine damage is possible.

Symptoms: Red coolant temperature warning light, engine overheating, coolant loss without visible leak

400–800 € from 80,000 km
! MAF and NOx Sensor Failures

The MAF sensor, DPF differential pressure sensor, and NOx sensor on the 1.6 TDI fail sporadically and generate fault codes without a clear mechanical cause. The engine enters limp mode. Replacing the faulty individual sensor usually resolves the issue.

Symptoms: MIL light on, engine limp mode, elevated fuel consumption, sporadic power drops without warning

100–600 €

Vehicle Weaknesses 4

!! Suspension Coil springs snap

From around the seventh year of use, coil springs can snap from material fatigue and corrosion. The front axle is most commonly affected. A broken spring is an immediate safety hazard.

300–700 € from 120,000 km
!! Electronics Ignition cable failures (early models)

Early A1 8X models (2010–2013) showed increased breakdown rates from faulty ignition cables. Misfires and power loss are the result.

80–250 € from 40,000 km
! Electronics Window regulator failure

Electric window regulators fail regularly. The cause is usually a worn motor, snapped cable, or faulty control unit. Driver and passenger doors are most commonly affected.

100–400 € from 80,000 km
! HVAC Air conditioning β€” leaks and failure

The air conditioning loses refrigerant over the years through leaking seals and hoses. On older cars from around 8 years, the AC compressor and condenser become prone to wear.

200–800 € from 100,000 km
