510 hp Ferrari V6 in an SUV — Fastest SUV at the Ring

The Stelvio QV packs the Ferrari-derived V6 biturbo into an SUV — sounds absurd, drives less absurdly than expected. With 510 hp, Q4 all-wheel drive and the AlfaLink rear axle, the Stelvio QV turns in like a sports car and accelerates like a supercar: 0–100 in 3.8 seconds, 283 km/h top speed. The higher centre of gravity costs precision in fast transitions compared to the Giulia, but the Stelvio offers everyday usability and space. Nürburgring lap record for SUVs: 7:51.7. Sound and power delivery identical to the Giulia QV — the same deep V6 roar at full throttle.

Engine Weaknesses 8

!! Oil pump check valve defective

A defective check valve behind the oil pump can incorrectly distribute oil pressure when the engine is switched off and trigger an oil pressure warning on restart. Known on the Giulia QV 2.9 V6.

Symptoms: Oil pressure warning on start, metallic banging briefly after cold start

200–800 €
!! Cylinder Failure / Wet Sleeve Failure

Extremely rare but documented total failure of individual cylinders due to failure of the wet cylinder liners (Ferrari F154 construction). Manufacturer replaces the engine completely — no repair possible. Wait time for a replacement unit can be up to 12 weeks.

Symptoms: Sudden power loss, rough running, misfires, warning lights. Engine diagnostics identify the faulty cylinder.

15,000–35,000 € from 80,000 km
!! Turbo coolant hose O-ring leaking

The O-ring on the coolant return at the turbocharger of the secondary cooling circuit tends to shrink from heat exposure. The leak slowly drains the intercooler expansion tank; fault code P026A is typical.

Symptoms: Dropping coolant level in the intercooler expansion tank, P026A, no visible external leak

80–350 € from 50,000 km
!! Oil thermostat / temperature control valve defective

The 2.9 V6 BiTurbo uses electronic bypass valves instead of conventional thermostats. If a valve fails closed, the engine overheats in the high-temperature circuit. Early detection via temperature monitoring is essential, as high oil temperatures cause bearing damage.

Symptoms: High oil temperature reading, fault code P2B61 (cooling control valve stuck closed), coolant temperature warning, overheating indicator

400–1,500 € from 80,000 km
!! Turbo oil line leaking

The turbochargers of the 2.9 V6 BiTurbo are lubricated with pressurised oil. The O-rings on the oil line connections can develop leaks and lose oil. IHI turbos are sensitive to oil starvation; a leak must be rectified immediately to prevent total failure.

Symptoms: Oil loss in the turbo area, oil smell after driving, oil pressure drop under high load, slight blue smoke from exhaust

150–600 € from 70,000 km
! Weak battery triggers electronics problems

A weak battery in the Giulia QV leads to various electronics problems that are difficult to diagnose. Many fault messages disappear after a battery replacement.

Symptoms: Various fault messages, irregular electronic faults, starting problems

150–400 € from 60,000 km
! Coolant temperature sensor malfunction

The four coolant temperature sensors on the 2.0 Turbo can sporadically deliver incorrect values. Typically a single sensor failure triggers engine warning lights without real overheating.

Symptoms: Sporadic temperature warning, engine warning light, implausible coolant temperature reading

50–200 € from 70,000 km
! Turbo O-Ring Coolant Loss

Early build years 2016–2018 showed loose O-ring seals on the turbocharger with minor coolant loss. Improved version was fitted under warranty. Used car buyers should check build year and service history.

Symptoms: Faint coolant smell after parking, dropping coolant level without visible leak, possible coolant temperature gauge fluctuations.

150–450 € from 30,000 km

Vehicle Weaknesses 7

!! Other Recall: Fuel pump can fail

Recall NHTSA 25V586000 for 2018–2019 Stelvio: fuel pump can fail due to heat exposure and cause sudden engine cut-out without warning. Part of a broad recall covering approx. 53,849 vehicles.

100–500 €
!! Electronics ECU damaged by water ingress

On the Stelvio, water can enter the ECU and damage control units. Faulty sealing is the cause. Typical result: multiple fault messages, vehicle may not start. Workshop visit required.

500–3,000 € from 28,000 km
!! Electronics Battery discharge triggers ECU faults

As with the Giulia, a weak or discharged battery on the Stelvio triggers cascading warning lights (ABS, ESP, brake system, collision warning). Keep the vehicle running on a sufficiently strong battery (min. 80 Ah AGM).

150–400 € from 50,000 km
!! Body Water ingress from blocked condensate drain

On the Stelvio 949, A/C condensate water runs into the cabin when the drain is blocked. Water collects on the passenger side and can damage the body control module. The blower can also draw water into the motor.

100–1,500 € from 40,000 km
! HVAC A/C cools insufficiently due to sensor position

The Stelvio 949 A/C cools insufficiently due to poorly positioned interior temperature sensors. The system reduces output at 24°C instead of the set 19°C. Refrigerant lines inadequately insulated near the DPF. Known design issue with no simple fix.

100–600 € from 30,000 km
! Suspension Adaptive dampers — connector corroded

On Stelvios with adaptive suspension (Alfa Active Suspension), a corroded connector plug on the rear damper triggers sporadic fault messages. The suspension then operates in a restricted mode across all settings. Cleaning the connector often resolves the issue without parts replacement.

50–800 € from 60,000 km
! Brakes Increased tyre and brake wear

The Stelvio 949 shows increased tyre wear under spirited driving (especially Pirelli OE fitment) and rapid brake pad wear. The rear brake requires service mode activation. Tyre set cost: €600–1,200.

400–1,200 € from 40,000 km

Reports & Tests

dauertest Endurance Test 2020 2020-01
Average

The Stelvio completed a 100,000 km endurance test without a single breakdown, demonstrating solid everyday reliability. At the final strip-down, however, inspectors found rust on the longitudinal members, early corrosion at mounting points and moisture in the sills. Wear marks on the crankshaft bearing journals were also noted.

vergleichstest Used Car Test 2022 2022-01
Above average

As a used car the Stelvio impresses with fundamentally solid build quality, but shows individual weak points with the front camera and navigation system. Uneven panel gaps were noted in isolated cases. The four-year factory warranty is a plus for younger examples.
