Alfa Romeo 1.75 TBi QV

940A1000 1.75L TBi 235 hp Manual Front-wheel drive Hatchback 2010–2020
– Be Careful
Engine 940A1000 – Be Careful 5,960–18,850 €

The 1750 TBi with cast iron block β€” 235 hp in the QV version, 200 hp in the base variant. Turbocharged four-cylinder with high specific output (134 hp/litre in the QV) that builds strong boost from 2,000 rpm. Not to be confused with the 960A1.000 in the 4C, which has a lighter aluminium block. The cast iron block is heavier but thermally more stable and longer-lived β€” a reliable engine with consistent maintenance. Turbo throttle response in Sport mode (DNA system) noticeably more aggressive than in Normal. Sound is surprisingly characterful for a turbocharged four, especially with a sports exhaust. MultiAir valve timing enables variable valve lift without a throttle plate.

Fun Factor? Fun to Drive!

Giulietta QV β€” 235 hp Hot Hatch with Alfa DNA

The Giulietta QV is Alfa's answer to the Golf GTI and Focus ST β€” 235 hp from the 1,750 TBi on the front axle, without a limited-slip diff. The DNA system in Dynamic mode sharpens throttle response and steering noticeably β€” the engine reacts faster to the throttle pedal, turbo lag shrinks considerably. In the base setting slightly lethargic below 2,000 rpm, from 3,000 rpm the supercharger pushes hard. Front-wheel drive with 340 Nm of torque β€” in the wet the front axle spins up, in the dry the steering fights. Not a surgical instrument like the Golf, but with more character and emotion.

Engine Weaknesses 8

!! Turbocharger vulnerable under high-performance use

The 1.75 TBi (235 hp) in the Giulietta QV is under high load. Turbo damage with aggressive driving and insufficient oil cool-down after hard use is documented.

Symptoms: Turbo whistling, power loss, blue smoke when accelerating

800–2,500 € from 100,000 km
!! Injectors and intake valves fouled

Direct injection on the 1.75 TBi leads to deposits on intake valves and injectors, particularly with short-trip driving.

Symptoms: Rough engine running, power loss, misfires

400–1,500 € from 100,000 km
!! MultiAir micro-filter blockage

The MultiAir oil micro-filter behind the timing belt cover must be checked at every oil change service. If overlooked, oil pressure drops in the MultiAir unit, causing misfires and cylinder drop-out.

Symptoms: Engine running on 3 cylinders, three-cylinder running on cold start, oily smell, engine warning light

50–150 € from 60,000 km
!! Valve stem seal oil consumption

Failed valve stem seals and cracked piston rings lead to elevated oil consumption on the 1.4 MultiAir Turbo. With over 2 litres per 5,000 km, the stem seals should be inspected; oily spark plugs are also an indicator.

Symptoms: Oil consumption above 0.5 L/1,000 km, oily spark plugs, blue smoke on cold start or under load

500–1,800 € from 90,000 km
!! Oil pressure solenoid failed

The oil pressure solenoid controls the cam phasing of the 1.75 TBi. Contaminated or failed valves deliver incorrect oil pressure signals and impair variable valve timing. Oil changes with 5W-40 at regular intervals delay the fault.

Symptoms: Engine warning light with VVT fault, sluggish throttle response, rattle on cold start, power loss in the lower rev range

100–350 € from 100,000 km
!! Wastegate solenoid failed

The electronic wastegate control valve on the 1.75 TBi causes unreliable boost pressure regulation. Faulty signals lead to excessive or insufficient boost. The valve is located on the turbo housing and can be replaced separately.

Symptoms: Fluctuating boost pressure, engine enters limp mode under high load, MIL with boost pressure fault, noticeable power loss

80–300 € from 120,000 km
!! Turbocharger Shaft Elevated Axial Play

The VTG turbocharger shaft of the 1.75 TBi frequently shows elevated axial play, indicating bearing wear. Early detection by a specialist is possible; left untreated it leads to turbocharger failure.

Symptoms: Faint whistling or whining from the turbo under load, oil mist at the turbo inlet, measurably elevated shaft play on inspection.

900–2,800 € from 90,000 km
!! TCT Dual-Clutch Wear

The TCT gearbox shows accelerated clutch wear under high-performance use. Clutch service life 75,000–90,000 km. Juddering during cold starts (1st–2nd gear) and software version are the first symptoms.

Symptoms: Juddering and harsh engagement on cold 1st–2nd gear shift, gearbox warning at 90,000 km, clutch slip under full load.

1,500–3,500 € from 80,000 km

Vehicle Weaknesses 7

!! Rust Rust on rear sills ahead of wheel arch

The rear sills on the Giulietta 940 rust concealed under the wheel arch transition. Moisture and dirt accumulate behind the plastic wheel arch liners. Swedish tests rated corrosion protection at only 2/5 points. Cavity wax treatment at purchase is recommended.

500–2,000 € from 120,000 km
! Suspension Control arms and drop links wear at the front

Control arms and anti-roll bar drop links on the Giulietta front axle are due at around 80,000 km. At the same time, engine mounts often fail (especially the right-hand side), causing vibrations and rough TCT gear changes. Dampers can be worn by 75,000 km.

300–800 € from 80,000 km
! Electronics Tailgate wiring harness breaks

The wiring harness in the tailgate hinge breaks from repeated opening and closing at around 70,000 km. Heated rear window, tailgate release and rear lights can fail. An inexpensive repair by re-terminating the cables is possible.

100–400 € from 70,000 km
! Interior Inner and outer door handles break

Inner and outer door handles on the Giulietta break from material fatigue. A well-known issue. Replacement parts are available cheaply. The fuel flap mechanism also fails from around 60,000 km.

30–150 € from 60,000 km
! HVAC Blend flap actuator and sun sensor failed

The blend flap actuator motors on the Giulietta 940 fail frequently β€” 5 motors are behind the dashboard. A misaligned sun sensor in the rear-view mirror housing can also cause complete heating failure. Difficult to diagnose, labour-intensive to repair.

200–800 € from 90,000 km
! Brakes Brembo brake disc warping from failed wheel hubs

The front Brembo brake discs on the Giulietta tend to cause steering wheel vibration when braking above 100 km/h. The cause is often a failed wheel hub, not the disc itself. Warranty replacement within 20,000 km is possible. Brake pad squeal under light pedal pressure is a known issue.

200–600 € from 30,000 km
! HVAC A/C compressor magnetic clutch cycles rapidly

The magnetic clutch on the Giulietta 940's air conditioning compressor switches on and off every second. Either a faulty pressure switch or oil underfill after compressor replacement is the cause. Compressor only available with the clutch, approximately 950 € plus fitment.

300–1,200 € from 80,000 km
