Alfa Romeo 1.4 TB MultiAir Super

940C2000 1.4L MultiAir Turbo 150 150 hp Manual Front-wheel drive Hatchback 2015–2018
– Be Careful
Engine 940C2000 – Be Careful 3,960–12,600 €

The 150 hp version of the MultiAir turbo — detuned compared to the 170 hp variant through more conservative boost calibration. Positioned as the base turbocharged petrol in the Giulietta. Same MultiAir technology, same service requirements, less power.

Fun Factor? Fun to Drive!

Giulietta with Bite

150 hp in the compact Alfa — agile chassis, direct steering feel and enough power for sporting driving pleasure. The MultiAir turbo revs willingly.

Engine Weaknesses 7

!! MultiAir unit blocked / failed

The hydraulic-electromagnetic MultiAir unit clogs when oil change intervals are too long or the wrong oil is used. Fault codes P1062/P1063. If ignored, a cascade failure up to a seized piston can result (8,000–10,000 €). Post-2013 (MultiAir II) is less frequently affected.

Symptoms: Engine running on 3 cylinders, flashing engine warning light, rough idle, start-stop system fails, power loss.

1,000–2,500 € from 50,000 km
!! Timing belt: short replacement interval

The 1.4 MultiAir timing belt must be replaced every 120,000 km or 8 years, under severe conditions after 4 years. A broken belt causes total engine destruction. The water pump is changed at the same time.

Symptoms: None until breakage. Preventive replacement is strongly recommended. Verify replacement history before purchase.

550–800 € from 120,000 km
!! MultiAir micro-filter blocked

The MultiAir unit micro-filter (55238665) must be cleaned or replaced at every oil change. A blocked filter causes oil pressure loss in the unit and cylinder drop-out.

Symptoms: Fault codes P1062/P1063, rough engine running, cylinder drops out intermittently. Symptoms temporarily disappear after engine flush.

50–200 € from 40,000 km
!! Elevated oil consumption from valve stem seals

Failed valve stem seals and piston rings cause elevated oil consumption on 1.4 MultiAir engines. Documented cases with over 2 litres lost per 5,000 km. Blue smoke is a typical sign.

Symptoms: Blue smoke from exhaust, oily spark plugs, oil level dropping within a few thousand kilometres, oil smell in the cabin.

400–1,800 € from 80,000 km
!! Oil sludge in crankcase ventilation

The crankcase ventilation tends to produce oil sludge with short-trip driving. A blocked oil separator diverts oil into the turbo pressure valve and intake tract. Fault code P1062 is a frequent consequence.

Symptoms: Heavy contamination under the oil filler cap, oil mist in the intake tract, boost pressure loss, MultiAir fault codes despite a new unit.

150–600 € from 100,000 km
!! Boost control valve filled with oil

The boost control valve fills with engine oil from the crankcase ventilation and loses its function. Workshops frequently mix up the connections during repair.

Symptoms: Power loss at higher revs, engine warning light, boost pressure below 1 bar, fault code P0244.

100–400 € from 60,000 km
! Ignition coil / spark plugs failed

Ignition coils and spark plugs wear faster than usual, especially on early MultiAir models. Oily spark plugs are often a consequence of oil ingress. A replacement interval of around 30,000 km is recommended.

Symptoms: Misfires (P0300–P0304), flashing engine warning light, rough idle, poor throttle response when accelerating.

80–350 € from 30,000 km

Vehicle Weaknesses 7

!! Rust Rust on rear sills ahead of wheel arch

The rear sills on the Giulietta 940 rust concealed under the wheel arch transition. Moisture and dirt accumulate behind the plastic wheel arch liners. Swedish tests rated corrosion protection at only 2/5 points. Cavity wax treatment at purchase is recommended.

500–2,000 € from 120,000 km
! Suspension Control arms and drop links wear at the front

Control arms and anti-roll bar drop links on the Giulietta front axle are due at around 80,000 km. At the same time, engine mounts often fail (especially the right-hand side), causing vibrations and rough TCT gear changes. Dampers can be worn by 75,000 km.

300–800 € from 80,000 km
! Electronics Tailgate wiring harness breaks

The wiring harness in the tailgate hinge breaks from repeated opening and closing at around 70,000 km. Heated rear window, tailgate release and rear lights can fail. An inexpensive repair by re-terminating the cables is possible.

100–400 € from 70,000 km
! Interior Inner and outer door handles break

Inner and outer door handles on the Giulietta break from material fatigue. A well-known issue. Replacement parts are available cheaply. The fuel flap mechanism also fails from around 60,000 km.

30–150 € from 60,000 km
! HVAC Blend flap actuator and sun sensor failed

The blend flap actuator motors on the Giulietta 940 fail frequently — 5 motors are behind the dashboard. A misaligned sun sensor in the rear-view mirror housing can also cause complete heating failure. Difficult to diagnose, labour-intensive to repair.

200–800 € from 90,000 km
! Brakes Brembo brake disc warping from failed wheel hubs

The front Brembo brake discs on the Giulietta tend to cause steering wheel vibration when braking above 100 km/h. The cause is often a failed wheel hub, not the disc itself. Warranty replacement within 20,000 km is possible. Brake pad squeal under light pedal pressure is a known issue.

200–600 € from 30,000 km
! HVAC A/C compressor magnetic clutch cycles rapidly

The magnetic clutch on the Giulietta 940's air conditioning compressor switches on and off every second. Either a faulty pressure switch or oil underfill after compressor replacement is the cause. Compressor only available with the clutch, approximately 950 € plus fitment.

300–1,200 € from 80,000 km
