Alfa Romeo 1.4 T-Jet
The 1.4-litre T-Jet is the more conventional turbocharged four-cylinder — no MultiAir valve timing, but simpler and more robust. 120 hp in the MiTo, 120 hp in the Giulietta. Frugal, reliable with regular maintenance, without the complexity of the MultiAir technology. The more straightforward choice for everyday drivers.
Giulietta as a Solid Entry Point
With 120 hp the Giulietta is adequately powered, but still far from the sporty ideal. Chassis and steering are excellent — the engine could do with more fire.
Engine Weaknesses 6
Turbocharger failure from insufficient lubrication or a failed wastegate actuator. Boost pressure loss occurs without warning, commonly from 80,000–120,000 km with irregular oil changes.
Symptoms: Sudden power loss, car barely accelerates, no noticeable boost pressure, fault code P0240.
The electro-hydraulic solenoid in the UniAir/MultiAir unit can block from oil residues (fault code: cylinder X UniAir actuator solenoid blocked). An engine flush with oil change can delay the need for replacement; ultimately the entire unit often needs replacing.
Symptoms: Rough running on individual cylinders, engine warning light, brief self-healing after restart
Valve stem seals and turbo bearings wear from around 100,000 km. Oil consumption up to 1 L/1,000 km in worst cases. Short-trip driving accelerates wear.
Symptoms: Blue exhaust plume after coasting downhill, low oil level between service intervals, oil mist in the intake tract.
Combustion misfires with P0300/P0302 from worn spark plugs or failed ignition coils. Most common at 80,000 km and on cold starts. Replacement interval of 30,000 km is recommended.
Symptoms: Stumbling under acceleration, MIL illuminates, engine running on 3 cylinders, power drop on cold running.
The crankshaft sensor sits in the engine bay without splash protection. Moisture and dirt cause sensor failure — a frequently documented MiTo-specific issue.
Symptoms: Engine fails to start or cuts out while driving, intermittent failures in rain or cold.
The small oil filter in the MultiAir unit behind the timing belt cover blocks when oil changes are too infrequent or the wrong oil is used. The filter must be changed separately; when blocked, the MultiAir unit loses oil pressure and no longer opens valves correctly.
Symptoms: Cylinder misfire, three-cylinder running, engine warning light, power loss especially on cold start
Vehicle Weaknesses 7
The rear sills on the Giulietta 940 rust concealed under the wheel arch transition. Moisture and dirt accumulate behind the plastic wheel arch liners. Swedish tests rated corrosion protection at only 2/5 points. Cavity wax treatment at purchase is recommended.
Control arms and anti-roll bar drop links on the Giulietta front axle are due at around 80,000 km. At the same time, engine mounts often fail (especially the right-hand side), causing vibrations and rough TCT gear changes. Dampers can be worn by 75,000 km.
The wiring harness in the tailgate hinge breaks from repeated opening and closing at around 70,000 km. Heated rear window, tailgate release and rear lights can fail. An inexpensive repair by re-terminating the cables is possible.
Inner and outer door handles on the Giulietta break from material fatigue. A well-known issue. Replacement parts are available cheaply. The fuel flap mechanism also fails from around 60,000 km.
The blend flap actuator motors on the Giulietta 940 fail frequently — 5 motors are behind the dashboard. A misaligned sun sensor in the rear-view mirror housing can also cause complete heating failure. Difficult to diagnose, labour-intensive to repair.
The front Brembo brake discs on the Giulietta tend to cause steering wheel vibration when braking above 100 km/h. The cause is often a failed wheel hub, not the disc itself. Warranty replacement within 20,000 km is possible. Brake pad squeal under light pedal pressure is a known issue.
The magnetic clutch on the Giulietta 940's air conditioning compressor switches on and off every second. Either a faulty pressure switch or oil underfill after compressor replacement is the cause. Compressor only available with the clutch, approximately 950 € plus fitment.
