Alfa Romeo 1.9 JTDM 16V
The 1.9-litre JTDM 16V with 150 hp and Multijet injection β the more modern JTD version with multiple injection events per stroke for smoother running and improved emissions. A good compromise of economy and pull in the 147. The GT with this engine is the sensible entry point: frugal, torque-rich, with the handsome Pininfarina coupΓ© design.
JTDM Power in the Small Alfa
150 hp diesel in the 147 β that feels right. Strong pull, agile chassis, real driving pleasure despite diesel DNA. The best 147 diesel.
Engine Weaknesses 6
Soot deposits from EGR coke up the intake manifold. Swirl flaps can break and cause severe damage as foreign bodies in the cylinders. Well-known issue on the 1.9 JTDM of the 159/147.
Symptoms: Power loss, black smoke, metallic knocking, possible engine damage
The VTG turbocharger clogs with soot deposits. Vane ring jams, leading to power loss and boost pressure faults.
Symptoms: Power loss, unstable boost pressure, engine warning light P0236
The DPF clogs with predominantly short-trip driving. Regular motorway runs are required for regeneration.
Symptoms: Engine warning light, power loss, elevated fuel consumption
The swirl flap actuator linkage in the intake tract wears and can break. Flaps then fall into the combustion chamber and cause engine damage. Blanking kit as permanent solution. Revised bush (part no. 55210201) can be retrofitted.
Symptoms: Engine warning light P2279/P2075, power loss, stumbling, elevated fuel consumption, smoke
The mass air flow (MAF) sensor on the 1.9 JTD becomes contaminated by oil vapour from the crankcase ventilation. Cleaning with MAF cleaner is often ineffective β replacement is necessary. When replacing, pay attention to compatible brands (Bosch/Magneti Marelli differences).
Symptoms: Loss of power, elevated fuel consumption, stumbling, engine warning light, air temperature sensor fault
The alternator freewheel (overrunning pulley) wears and causes whistling or squealing, especially on cold starts around 2,000 rpm. The freewheel can be tested and replaced separately while the alternator is installed using a Hazet tool. Often only the freewheel is defective, not the entire alternator.
Symptoms: Whistling or squealing on cold start around 2,000 rpm, noise disappears when warm
Vehicle Weaknesses 11
The V6 3.2 ECU is heat-sensitive and can fail at high ambient temperatures. Engine cuts out suddenly and only restarts after 15β20 minutes of cooling. No fault code stored.
The stock differential in the GTA gearbox can break under load β a bevel gear detaches and punches through the bell housing. Often without warning. A Q2 limited-slip differential is the recommended upgrade.
Early 147 GTA models have 305 mm Brembo discs instead of 330 mm. Alfa upgraded them to 330 mm under warranty. Unupgraded vehicles are prone to brake fade during spirited driving.
Sill lower edges and wheel arches rust from stone chips and moisture ingress. Areas around the jacking points are particularly at risk, where the plastic trim traps moisture.
Joints, bushes and anti-roll bar drop links on the front axle wear above average. Renewal typically required every 100,000β150,000 km. Plan for a suspension refresh at higher mileage.
The 305 mm braking system on the GTA is undersized for the 250 hp and wears heavily. Brake discs and pads must be renewed significantly more often than on regular 147 variants.
Window regulators and central locking fail from moisture ingress and aging control units. Door handles break. Airbag connectors on the side airbags can come loose.
On the Alfa 147 the air conditioning seals age and cause permanent refrigerant loss. Engine oil leaks from the timing belt can spray onto the compressor and cause additional damage. Compressor replacement: 400β900 β¬.
The 147 heater stays cold or delivers only lukewarm air, especially at idle. A blocked heat exchanger or air pockets in the system are the usual cause. Blend flap motor faults (often failed bulbs in the climate control unit) are also possible.
The Alfa 147's duplex power steering lines are prone to leaks, causing knocking and heavy steering. A leaking right-hand power steering pressure hose is known. Part cost approximately 100 β¬, fitment 1.5 labour hours. Steering play is not adjustable.
The 147 interior produces cold-weather creaking from trim panels and seat springs. On cold winter start-ups, seats and door trims squeak and crack. A typical quality issue on vehicles over 8 years old.
